Maybe he's a cunt? Southgate doesnt want cunts in his team even if it looks like its full of them. He's a student of coaching and team dynamics and I think players left out says a lot about them as team people.

World Cups squads should be about having different options available if plan A, B or even C isn't working. For that reason I would have taken Carroll because he is a) fit for once b) fresh after hardly having played this season c) offers something different.

If we are desperate for a goal with 10 mins to go and we're struggling to break down a stubborn organised defence. Send on Carroll to shake things up a bit and start going route 1.
